What does Device Lock do?
Cel-Fi devices that connect to the WAVE App can have their configuration "locked" so that changes cannot be made from the WAVE App. The Cel-Fi device will still connect to the WAVE App as normal and allow the user to view performance data and configuration settings; however, the WAVE App user will not be able to make configuration changes while the device is locked.
Why would a device be locked?
Device Lock prevents configuration changes from being made using the WAVE App. Cel-Fi Partners may opt to lock a device during installation to improve maintenance and mitigate potential configuration changes by unauthorized users. This is a common practice when the system is installed in a public space.
Access to the device in the WAVE Portal is required to unlock the device, which introduces an element of authority to device configuration which is not otherwise available to unlocked devices.
Users without access to the WAVE Portal are recommended to not lock their Cel-Fi devices.
Which devices support the device lock feature?
Cel-Fi devices which connect to the WAVE App are capable of being Locked. Please review this article for a list of models that work with the WAVE App.
How do I lock a device using the WAVE App?
It is recommended that users without access to the WAVE Portal do not lock their Cel-Fi devices.
Once locked, configuration changes cannot be made using the WAVE App. The device may only be unlocked via the WAVE Portal.
If you do not have WAVE Portal access, you will need to request an Unlock Code from your point-of-sale to make any configuration changes or software updates in the future.
Steps to lock a device from the WAVE App:
- Connect to the Cel-Fi device using WAVE App.
- Click the "hamburger icon" in the top left of the screen and select "Lock Booster".
- Check the "Lock Booster" box.
- Press "Update" to continue.
- Press "Lock Now" to again confirm and immediately implement the lock.
- The device is now locked. A yellow lock icon now appears in the top right of the App for visual confirmation.
How do I unlock a device using the WAVE App?
Unlocking a Cel-Fi device with the WAVE App always requires a device's Unlock Code, generated by the WAVE Portal. The WAVE App unlock process may be completed while either online or offline, in the event that the WAVE App does not have internet connectivity.
However, before beginning the unlock process in the WAVE App, you will need to have the device's Unlock Code. This may be requested from your point-of-sale. If you have WAVE Portal access, please refer to How do I unlock a device using the WAVE Portal? process.
Steps to unlock a device from the WAVE App:
- Connect to the Cel-Fi device using WAVE App.
- Click the "hamburger icon" in the top left of the screen and select "Unlock Booster".
- Enter the 16-digit Unlock Code in the box provided.
- Press "Unlock". If the PIN entered is valid, then the device will immediately unlock.
- The device is now unlocked and settings may be changed using the WAVE App. The yellow lock icon has disappeared from the top right of the App for visual confirmation.
How do I lock a device using the WAVE Portal?
Device Lock can be easily initiated from the device's System Settings page on the WAVE Portal. If the device is currently active and reachable by the WAVE Portal, then the lock will be implemented immediately. If the device is currently offline, then the lock will be put into a Pending state and automatically enforced the next time the device comes online.
A Cel-Fi device may be online and reachable by the WAVE Portal either by connecting to the device using the WAVE App on an internet-connected phone, or by using the device's integrated ethernet port, if applicable.
Steps to lock a device from the WAVE Portal:
- Login to the WAVE Portal.
-
- If you do not have access to the WAVE Portal, please contact your point-of-sale to request an Unlock Code for your device.
-
- Select "Systems" from the left menu. Locate and click on the appropriate device.
-
- If you have access to the WAVE Portal, but cannot locate the device
-
- Select "Options > Settings" from the top-right menu.
- In the Lock Settings section, click "Lock".
- If the device is online, then it will immediately lock and confirm the new status in the WAVE Portal.
- If the device is offline, then the device will enter a "Pending Lock" status. The device will automatically lock the next time it comes online, and this lock status change will be immediately reflected in the WAVE Portal.

The device will not automatically unlock by simply returning to an online, active state; the Unlock Code must instead be used in the WAVE App to complete this task. The code is displayed here for easy entry into the WAVE App. Copy the Unlock Code and send it to the WAVE App user. Refer to the process above on how to use this Unlock Code, How do I unlock a device using the WAVE App?
What does Pending Lock/Unlock mean in the WAVE Portal?
The WAVE Portal can be used to initiate a Lock or Unlock instruction for the Cel-Fi device, even if the device is not currently online. When this is done, the WAVE Portal reports the Pending status.
Pending Lock means that the device is currently offline, believed to be unlocked, and that when the device comes back online the WAVE Portal will instruct the device to lock itself so configuration changes can no longer be made by the WAVE App.
Pending Unlock means that the device is currently offline, believed to be locked, and that the Unlock Code is available for offline unlock use by the WAVE App.
Pending Lock/Unlock requests may be canceled.
Note that the WAVE Portal "believes" it knows the status of the device; however, because it is offline, this may not always be accurate. For example, an offline device may be locked by the WAVE App; or, an offline device that was locked may become unlocked with the use of an Unlock Code. In both scenarios, if the device does not subsequently come online, the WAVE Portal can only assume the device status based on its state during its most recent direct connection to the WAVE Portal.
What if the device cannot access the WAVE Portal?
I device can be locked or unlocked by the WAVE App even if it is offline. This requires a Bluetooth connection to the device. Unlocking also requires an Unlock Code issued by the WAVE Portal.
For more information, please review the appropriate section above:
Is the Unlock Code one-time-use?
No. A device's Unlock Code does not change. Once issued, it may be used on that device to repeatedly unlock the device whenever needed. This is particularly beneficial for offline devices, allowing an authorized user who has been provided the Unlock Code to lock and unlock it whenever needed, without needing to request or retrieve a new code each time.
