What is SNMP? SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is protocol for monitoring and managing devices on IP networks. It enables authorized users to collect information about device status and active alarms, and may also provide remote command capabilities. The SNMP architecture operates with an “agent” on the device and a “manager” platform configured to send and receive messages with registered devices. An organization may use an SNMP management platform to centrally aggregate health monitoring and system control across many locations, varied device types, and different device manufacturers. SNMP with SHIELD EXTEND and SHIELD SOLO With the introduction of SHIELD MU (Management Unit) version 11 firmware, the SHIELD EXTEND and SHIELD SOLO products now support SNMP. Configuring and enabling the SNMP agent for SHIELD is performed in the WAVE Portal once the system is commissioned and calibrated. SHIELD SNMP Networking Requirements The MU has a single network port, labeled WAN. The primary function of this interface is to communicate with the WAVE Cloud. When the SNMP agent is enabled, it is also used for SNMP messages. If SNMP traffic will be routed locally or over a VPN, then outbound traffic to the WAVE Cloud must also be permitted, either from the local gateway or via hairpin at the VPN server. In addition to the connectivity requirements of your chosen SNMP management platform, the following outbound connections are required by SHIELD:
SNMP Features Available The SNMP agent on SHIELD EXTEND and SHIELD SOLO includes:
The agent supports SNMP versions 2c and 3. Version 3 is strongly recommended. Enabling SNMP on SHIELD Once the SHIELD system is commissioned on the WAVE Portal and calibrated on site using the WAVE PRO App, it is ready to be configured for SNMP by following these steps:
